After a four-day search, authorities in Maryland have recovered the submerged body of Maeve McKean, the 40-year-old granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy, who went missing on Friday afternoon.
Her 8-year-old son, Gideon McKean, is still missing, however, and the search for him will resume on Tuesday.
Maeve and Gideon were both last seen on Friday afternoon, about 10 miles south of Annapolis. According to McKean’s husband, the two were playing kickball on the property of McKean’s mother, former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, when one of them kicked the ball into a cove. While they tried to go get it in a canoe, they “somehow got pushed by wind or tide into the open bay,” he said. The canoe was found overturned on Friday around 7 p.m.
McKean’s death is yet another tragic incident in the extended Kennedy family tree. Aside from the assassinations of both Robert and McKean’s grand-uncle John F. Kennedy, several others have suffered untimely deaths.
