Elderly Bronx man dead in fire in Catholic church-affiliated senior home

An elderly man died in a fire in a Bronx senior citizen home on Saturday evening, police said.
The blaze erupted around 5:46 p.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Manor on E. 232nd St. between Carpenter Ave. and White Plains Rd. in Wakefield, the Fire Department said.
The six-story, 54-unit residence is down the street from Montefiore Hospital.
Firefighters had the blaze under control by 6 p.m., officials said.
Two people were taken to a hospital in critical condition. One of the injured, a man, died of the injuries he suffered in the blaze, police said late Saturday.
Our Lady of Mercy is operated by Catholic Homes New York, which says on its website that it operates “affordable housing for families and seniors throughout the Archdiocese of New York.”
