A 5-year-old boy and the 25-year-old woman who tried to save him died Saturday after drowning in the backyard pool of Carl Crawford’s home in Houston.
Police responded to the home of the retired baseball player around 2:40 p.m. Saturday after calls about a drowning, according to the Houston Chronicle.
Houston Police spokeswoman Jodi Silva told the newspaper that the young boy had been swimming in the pool when he started struggling to breathe.
The woman jumped in to help, but was unable to save the boy. She also drowned.
Both were transported to Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital and declared dead, Silva told the Chronicle.
It’s unclear if the two were related or their connection to Crawford. Neither has been publicly identified.
Crawford, 38, retired in 2016 after a 15-year career with the Tampa Bay Rays, Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers.
