Two George Washington statues, part of the iconic arch in Greenwich Village’s Washington Square Park, were defaced with red paint early Monday, police said.
NYPD surveillance cameras captured a woman on a Citibike acting as a lookout for two men who hurled paint-filled balloons at the statues about 3:20 a.m., police said.
Video released Monday night shows one man hurling balloons at one statue while a second squats down in front of the other.

One statue is of Washington as a general during the Revolutionary War while the other depicts him as America’s first president.

The vandalism was noticed by dozens of passersby, many of whom stopped to take pictures.

“It’s a waste of city resources,” Parks worker John Saunders said of the clean up he was helping with. “This funding could be used for school programs instead.”

A food cart worker, Nasr Khalil, vending across the street from the arch also criticized the defacement.

“I don’t like that this happened,” Khalil said. “This (monument) is for all of the community.”

Activists in the wake of nationwide George Floyd protests have pointed out that Washington owned slaves.

  1. Washington Square was once and still is a mass burial GRAVEYARD for thousands of victims of cholera and typhus in the 1800's. None of the bodies have been removed over the years either and are still all there..... so basically these idiots are defacing a graveyard...but don't tell them that!!!! Maybe the ghosts of Washington Square Graveyard will come up and haunt these idiots.....
